What are trademark classes, and which ones do I need?

The short answer

Trademarks are registered per class of goods or services — there are 45 international (Nice) classes, 34 for goods and 11 for services. You need the class(es) covering what you actually sell, and often the class covering how you sell it.

A registration in Class 25 (clothing) does not protect you in Class 35 (retail and online stores) — which is why many product businesses file in a goods class and Class 35. Choosing classes is a commercial judgment: too few leaves gaps, too many wastes money and invites challenges for non-use.

The description inside the class matters as much as the class number — it defines exactly what your registration covers.
