Do my Indian trademark and patent protect me internationally?

The short answer

No — IP rights are territorial. An Indian registration protects you in India. For abroad, use the Madrid Protocol (trademarks) or PCT route (patents) to file efficiently in multiple countries, prioritising markets where you sell, manufacture, or fear copying.

Territoriality cuts both ways: your Indian rights stop at the border, and foreign businesses' rights do not automatically reach India (as Toyota learned over 'Prius'). International protection is bought country by country — the treaties just streamline the buying.

The two main highways

Strategy beats coverage: protect where revenue, manufacturing or credible copycats actually are. A filing map for a typical SMB is usually 3-6 countries, not thirty.
